What are the best places to live in Cincinnati?

It would have to be close to public transportation and hopefully some local businesses. I am not really interested in the suburbs, I am going to be without a car for a short while. I should add that I am looking for a relatively safe area, I don't know a lot about Cinci. I have lived in the Dayton area all my life.
